Samad Seyidov: We would like Section 907 to be permanently repealed
Washington, November 21, AZERTAC
“The August 8 meeting is an event written in golden letters in the history of Azerbaijan. President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, laid the foundation of peace in Washington, elevating the region to a completely new level, and Azerbaijan–U.S. relations have now reached the level of a strategic partnership,” said Samad Seyidov, Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Affairs and head of the Azerbaijani delegation — consisting of representatives of the Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Center for the Analysis of International Relations, and the Jewish community — during his visit to Washington.
According to him, bilateral relations had dropped to almost zero under the previous U.S. administration.
“However, after August 8, the situation changed completely. The dissolution of the Minsk Group, the waiver of Section 907, the recent appointment of the United States co-chair of the working group, as well as visits of high-level U.S. officials to Azerbaijan to discuss Azerbaijan–U.S. relations in Baku, mark a new chapter in history. We feel this change in Congress and the Senate. There was a time when they did not even want to take photos with us because of the Armenian lobby. The lobby still exists, but Azerbaijan is now a different Azerbaijan, and the United States is a different United States. Meetings are increasing day by day. Senators and congressmen now want to visit Azerbaijan, and they do so,” Samad Seyidov added.
Emphasizing that Azerbaijan’s strength comes from having a leadership that firmly advocates truth and justice at the highest level, Chairman Seyidov noted: “Today we are witnessing this, and I firmly believe that relations will continue to develop and achieve even greater success. We hope that the U.S. Congress and Senate will discuss and permanently repeal Section 907. We also want the Armenian lobby — which still attempts to undermine overall peace initiatives related to Azerbaijan – to understand that their actions are not against us, but against the interests of the United States. America already understands this at the highest level.”
