CONFERENCE ON CONFLICT SETTLEMENT IN GUAM COUNTRIES ENDS IN BAKU
The international conference on principled foundations of conflict settlement in the territories of GUAM member states wrapped up Wednesday in Baku with representatives from 15 countries in attendance.
The conference aimed to support efforts to implement decisions made by heads of GUAM states (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) and to mobilize wide international support for the member countries.
The conference participants heard reports on causes and consequences of conflicts, territorial integrity of states, occupation of lands and other issues.
Austrian lawyer Gabriel Lanski told of the grave consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which drove over a million people from their homes and claimed over 20 thousand lives.
Experts stressed separatist regimes had occupied the lands of independent states and, that international law does not recognize such regimes. They said Nagorno-Karabakh is the integral part of Azerbaijan.
It was noted that settlement of conflicts in Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Transdnestria must be based on territorial integrity of states.
