NATO PA ROSE-ROTH SEMINAR CONTINUED IN BAKU
The Rose-Roth seminar entitled “Security in the Caspian Region” was continued Friday at the Park INN-Azerbaijan hotel.
EU Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel delivered a report on “EU policy in the Central Asia”. He said EU keeps a close eye on the processes taking place in the Central Asia and South Caucasus. Some countries have joined the EU Neighborhood Policy. Energy security is also a topical issue in the Caspian region including the Central Asia. The European Union attaches a particular importance to combining efforts to find alternative energy resources, safeguard security and prevent terrorism and illegal drugs turnover.
Representatives of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan reported on the energy security of their countries, and cooperation with NATO.
NATO Secretary General`s Special Representative Robert Simmons made a report on “NATO policies in the Central Asia”. He said NATO had done much work to establish peace in the world and prevent terrorism, illegal drugs turnover. According to him, Central Asia and South Caucasus nations can play important role in this process. He said Azerbaijan actively cooperates with some NATO programs. Today, Azerbaijan achieved more success in comparison with other countries.
He noted NATO`s major goal is to start a dialogue to solve problems and achieve political, economic and democratic development in the partner countries.
Simmons pointed out that NATO is keen on peace and security in the Caspian and Central Asia regions.
Then, Simmons provided information about NATO-Russia relationships and Alliance`s projects in the Central Asia.
Participants of the seminar also heard the reports on “Regional Security Cooperation in the Central Asia”, “EU policies in the Central Asia” and others.
Seminar will be continued March 8.
