YAP SENDS PROTEST LETTER TO US CONGRESSMEN
The New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has sent a letter to a group of US congressmen - Joe Knollenberg, Frank Pallone, Brad Sherman, Adam Schiff and Howard Berman - to protest against thier positions during the hearing titled "The Caucasus: Frozen Conflicts and Closed Borders." held by the US House Foreign Affairs Committee
The letter says:
“During the hearing, US-Azerbaijan strategic relations were thoroughly analyzed and highly assessed. Unfortunately, remarks made by you and some your colleagues raised objections of the Azerbaijani public and the New Azerbaijan Party. In those remarks, the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh was not objectively assessed and untrue ideas were voiced. We are sure that you and other like-minded congressmen are aware of the UN Security Council resolutions (822, 853, 874, 884). You know that Armenia’s aggression resulted in occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands, driving over 1 million people from their homes. In spite of this, Azerbaijan government has been pursuing the policy directed to the peaceful settlement of the conflict and observing the ceasefire achieved since 1994.
Today, there is no land blockade of Armenia. On the contrary, this nation has left itself out of all regional projects because of its ongoing aggressive policy. Given you object to any blockade, it would be more logical if you direct your objections to Armenia first because Armenian aggression resulted in blockading Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, integral part of Azerbaijan, leaving the landlocked Nakhchivan with no overland transport links with the rest of Azerbaijan. Air transport is the only way of communications between Nakhchivan and Azerbaijan.
We are hopeful that you will accept objection of the people of Azerbaijan and the New Azerbaijan Party and adopt more objective stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict”.
