Baku, April 20, AZERTAC
On December 24, 2022, the views expressed by President Ilham Aliyev in a meeting with a group of intellectuals from Western Azerbaijan are of great historical and political importance. There is a big program behind every idea in the speech of the President at the meeting.
Today, returning to Western Azerbaijan is one of the most important tasks for every Azerbaijani, including young people. The main duty of every Azerbaijani youth is to be active in these processes and convey the truth using modern technological opportunities and tools. For this purpose, we should express a united position regarding the return to Western Azerbaijan in various institutions and platforms where we are represented.
During the 44-day Patriotic War, the role of Azerbaijani youth was significant. Young people played an active role in supporting the Azerbaijani military and raising awareness about the conflict on social media. Many young Azerbaijanis volunteered to fight in the war effort, joining the Azerbaijani Armed Forces and participating in military operations on the front lines. Overall, the youth of Azerbaijan played a crucial role in the Second Karabakh War, demonstrating their patriotism and dedication to their country.
Now we have to show solidarity again and use our knowledge and potential to contribute to the return to our native land - Western Azerbaijan. Again, I want to say that the right to return of Western Azerbaijanis cannot be presented as a territorial claim. We want to return to our native lands peacefully, safely and with dignity, and we demand that from Armenia to ensure this right.
Armenia has systematically destroyed the Azerbaijani cultural heritage that belongs to us in this country. The destruction of cultural and religious sites, including mosques, graveyards and other sacred places, is also a gross violation of international humanitarian law and human rights.
As a result of the ethnic cleansing carried out in different years, the expelling of Azerbaijanis from the current territory of Armenia, where they once constituted an absolute majority, was completed in 1991. Now, the end of the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020 creates a favourable basis for achieving lasting peace between the two countries. However, the inability of Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia to return to their homes, the continuation of the policy of mono-ethnic statehood, ethnic cleansing, and racial discrimination in Armenia represent an immense injustice. This situation does not help endeavors to attain lasting peace.
