Pakistan expresses deep concern over regional security situation following attacks in Qatar
Islamabad, Hilal Ahmad, June 24, AZERTAC
Pakistan has expressed its deep concern and alarm at the serious escalation in the security situation in the region following attacks against the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
Iran launched a limited missile attack on Monday on a U.S. military base in Qatar, in retaliation for the American bombing of its nuclear sites. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued in Islamabad on Tuesday, said that “we strongly condemn the recent violations of the principle of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.”
Pakistan urged adherence to the fundamental principles of international law and called for restraint by all sides. Pakistan also reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve all conflicts and urged immediate de-escalation.
Qatar condemned the attack on Al Udeid Air Base, but said it had successfully intercepted both short- and medium-range ballistic missiles targeting the U.S. base.
Soon after the attack, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with the Ambassador of the State of Qatar in Islamabad, Ali Mubarak Ali Essa Al-Khater. During the call, the Prime Minister expressed his serious concern over the reports of missile attacks on a U.S. military base in Qatar by Iran.
While expressing solidarity with the Government and people of Qatar during this difficult time, the Prime Minister urged that all efforts be made to de-escalate tensions and restore peace in the region.
