Pakistan to assume presidency of United Nations Security Council
Islamabad, Hilal Ahmad, June 30, AZERTAC
Pakistan is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for July 2025, starting on Tuesday. This role coincides with Pakistan’s ongoing two-year term as a non-permanent UNSC member, which began on January 1, 2025, and will conclude in December 2026.
Pakistan has previously served as a non-permanent UNSC member eight times, in the periods of 2012–2013, 2003–2004, 1993–1994, 1983–1984, 1976–1977, 1968–1969, 1952–1953, and now 2025–2026. During its July presidency, Pakistan will host two high-level events focused on multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes, as well as cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Pakistan secured its current UNSC seat with strong support, receiving 182 out of 193 votes in the election held in June 2024.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, recently met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the work program for Pakistan’s presidency. Ambassador Ahmad assured the UN Secretary-General that Pakistan’s tenure as UNSC President will be conducted in an open, transparent, and consultative manner.
