President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Rene van der Linden today has met with representatives of political parties, members of the Milli Majlis of the Azerbaijan Republic
Rene van der Linden said Azerbaijan has done much work to honor its CoE commitments. According to him, it is impossible to change the society within short time this is why this work must be continued.
He pointed out that next year’s presidential elections will have a great impact on the country’s image. PACE considers that Azerbaijan’s Election Code must be improved.
Rene van der Linden said Nagorno-Karabakh conflict seriously impedes development of Azerbaijan and region as a whole. It was discussed during Rene van der Linden’s visit to Armenia. Soonest and fair resolution of the conflict is vitally important not only for the region but also Europe and, notably, next generations. We realize that territorial integrity of Azerbaijan is inviolable and occupied territories must be returned, he said.
Deputy chairman and executive secretary of the New Azerbaijan Party, member of the Milli Majlis Ali Ahmadov thanked Rene van der Linden for his stance towards so-called presidential elections to be conducted by the separatist regime in Nagorno-Karabakh. He said Azerbaijan chose the democratic path of development, and now is integrating into the West. All necessary steps are being taken to conduct transparent, fair and democratic elections in Azerbaijan. The government of Azerbaijan does its best to find a peaceful solution to the conflict with no results achieved yet. Therefore, Azerbaijan can avail itself of the right of liberating its lands by other ways. Azerbaijan in no way can assume the obligation of avoiding too long the solution of the conflict by force. According to him, Europe and PACE must impose sanctions on Armenia, which supports separatist regime, and demand fulfillment of all decisions and resolutions on the problem.
Members of other parties also expressed their opinions on the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
