Baku, May 17, AZERTAC
As part of the 13th Session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13), the World Assembly of Local and Regional Governments has commenced under the theme “Local Leadership Shaping a Renewed Multilateralism.”
The Assembly serves as a high-level political platform bringing together city mayors, governors, regional leaders, and global partners to reaffirm the collective voice of local and regional governments as key actors in shaping the future of multilateral cooperation and sustainable urban development.
As the level of governance closest to communities, local and regional authorities play an essential role in implementing the New Urban Agenda over the next decade, translating global commitments into local actions that directly impact daily life.
Speeches by pioneering local leaders showcasing transformative practices are being delivered, with discussions focused on how such experiences can inform systemic reforms and investment models at the global level.
The Assembly is expected to serve as an important platform for political convergence, reaffirming local democracy, intergovernmental solidarity, and multilevel cooperation as key pillars of a renewed social contract serving both people and the planet.
It will also contribute to ongoing global processes on climate action, development financing, and localization, including preparations for the High-Level Political Forum and subsequent stages.
