Armenian expert: The EU mission is studying Armenia itself, not the region
Baku, December 30, Tamilla Mammadova, AZERTAC
“The mission of the European Union (EU) is studying not the region, but rather Armenia itself,” Armenian expert Ish’han Verdyan said during the latest episode of the “Azerbaijan and the World” program broadcast by the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC), commenting on the outcomes of the 6th meeting of the EU–Armenia Partnership Council held in Brussels.
According to the expert, the composition of the mission, which includes former representatives of European intelligence structures, prevents it from being considered a neutral element.
Verdyan noted that the mission, stationed in specific locations, is primarily engaged in a detailed study of infrastructure, logistics, and communication systems in the areas where it operates. He assessed that such activities create a risk of sensitive internal information leaking beyond the country’s borders.
The expert further stated that Armenian politicians continue to support this vector of foreign presence due to a lack of foresight and without fully understanding the possible consequences. He added that officials in the government still tend to view Europeans as guarantors of their own success and do not sufficiently consider the long-term risks.
Verdyan also expressed the view that, over time, the mission’s activities could be discontinued, as has previously occurred with other foreign military formats.
