Jean-Victor Castor: France opposes revealing truth about Guiana
Baku, February 3, AZERTAC
“France opposes the establishment of a Truth Commission on Guiana's indigenous people, because it does not want an investigation and uncovering of the truth about its actions in Guiana,” said Jean-Victor Castor, Member of the National Assembly of the France (from French Guiana), participant of the colloquium titled "Truth Commission on the indigenous population of Guiana" co-organized by the left democratic and republican parliamentary group and the IFJD - Institut Louis Joinet at the National Assembly in his interview with AZERTAC.
Underlining that they have not reached any consensus so far, the MP said: "There are those who oppose experts, researchers, those who want to realize the truth and reconciliation commission by benefiting from the experiences of Canada, Australia and other countries. I have no expectations from the government. Evidently, the experts provided several facts, some of which the state rejected. Thus, people decided to take some actions. This process has no legal basis and is particularly related to indigenous peoples. That’s why it is crucial that indigenous peoples participate in this process. Because their voice needs to be heard. Right now, the truth needs to come to light. The book and the initial report on preliminary research, which were both presented at this event, are just the beginning of the process."
Jean-Victor Castor emphasized that some people are reluctant to talk because they fear the harsh consequences of the regime. He pointed out that despite this, the conference participants highlighted what they and their parents had witnessed.
