PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF AZERBAIJANHIS EXCELLENCYMR. ILHAM ALIYEV
I want to convey my most sincere condolences and the condolence of Lincoln University on the death of your father, the late President of Azerbaijan. His career spanned some of the most challenging years of your nation.
You may recall that we met in early May of this year when I came to Azerbaijan to award an honorary degree from Lincoln University to then President Aliyev. Your father was first taken ill at that time, and I had the honor of meeting you in his place at that time.
Since I never met your father I cannot share any personal experiences. However, my wife whom I met in 1991 after she came to America, is originally from Moscow. When I told her that I would be going to Azerbaijan to present an honorary degree to your father, she told me about one day in the early 1980s when she was still living in Moscow with her very young son. On that day, as they were walking on the street, her son observed a large sign with a photograph of 10 leaders, one of whom was your father. He pointed to your father’s face on the sign and asked why he was so handsome while the other men looked so boring.
I look forward to meeting with you again in the near future both in my official capacity as Chairman of the Board of Lincoln University and in my personal capacity as a former professor and as an international business attorney.
Once again, my most sincere condolences. Also, please convey my condolences to your uncle, professor Jalal, who I met several times and whom I hold in the highest regard.
Your sincerely,
Allan A. Samsom
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Lincoln University
