Radiation in sea outside Fukushima 100 times above normal

Baku, May 21 (AZERTAC). Radiation levels in the sea water outside the 3rd generating unit`s water intake of the Fukushima nuclear plant is approximately 100 times above normal, or 20 terabecquerel, says the plant operator TEPCO (the Tokyo Electric Power Company).

TEPCO has been previously focused on the water intake of unit 2, where radioactive substance leakages into the Pacific exceeded the norm 20,000 times on April 21st.

According to expert estimates, 520 tons of radioactive water has leaked into the Pacific since Fukushima suffered the accident in March this year.

Experts have managed to reduce leaks in recent weeks through erecting a steel fence around the power plant water intakes, but the protection system has failed to prove sufficiently effective.
