TURKMENCHAY TREATY AS HISTORICAL INJUSTICE IN HISTORY OF AZERBAIJAN
A scientific-practical conference devoted to the 180th anniversary of the Turkmenchay Treaty was held in the military historical museum of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan.
The conference discussed the essence and grave consequences of the Treaty signed on February in 1828.
Haji Hasanov, representative of the Academy of National Sciences informed the conferees on the events, took place in XIX century in the history of Azerbaijan. He said Tsarist Russia that had great attention to the Caucasus in its foreign policy started pursuing occupation policy since the beginning of XIX century.
He also added that Russian generals, choosing Karabakh in the occupation plan of the Caucasus, sought to use Armenians as an instrument in order to benefit from the region’s geo-strategic position.
Addressing the event, other historians underlined the importance of exposing real facts on the treaty, citing documents from archive. They said that the Treaty of Turkmenchay created favorable condition for Russia to move Armenians from Turkey and Iran to the occupied territories. They also emphasized that the establishment process of the state called “Armenia” started from that time.
“The Treaty shows that Armenians are not the real inhabitants of the Karabakh region. But official Yerevan and some political circles are making efforts to mislead the world community”, the historians said.
A film dealing with the events that took place in XIX century was demonstrated at the conference.
