EU, AZERBAIJAN: COOPERATION TO BE EXPANDED
It is time for the European Union (EU) and Azerbaijan to expand bilateral cooperation even more. This opinion was voiced on February 4, during Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov’s meeting with European Union “Troika”.
Dimitrij Rupel, President of the European Union, Slovenian Foreign Minister said the EU is interested in strengthening stability in the South Caucasus and also this region’s development. He also added that this could be achieved by joint will and efforts.
He noted, EU would always support the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement.
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the European Commission, European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy highly assessed the Azerbaijan-EU cooperation in the spheres of political dialogue, economic development, energy security, regional partnership, democracy, and human rights and emphasized the necessity of speeding up implementation of the European Neighborhood Policy. She also said the opening of EU office in Azerbaijan would promote expansion of bilateral cooperation with business circles and other strata of society involving into this cooperation.
Elmar Mammadyarov, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, welcoming expansion of EU-Azerbaijan cooperation spoke about Azerbaijan’s opportunities in diversification of Europe’s energy supplies. He also drew attention to large-scale projects, which have great importance for both the region and Europe.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister also touched upon the economic development, democratic building process in Azerbaijan, as well as the country’s position on the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. He stressed the necessity of putting more emphasis on the education within the European Neighborhood Policy and recommended the experience exchange program be developed for people working in various spheres.
The sides also touched upon the EU-Black Sea region cooperation, transportation of natural gas to Europe and other issues of mutual interest.
