GUAM MAY CHANGE ORDER IN POST-SOVIET SPACE
Many Russian media cover the GUAM Summit with participation of the representatives from about 30 countries and international organizations hosted in the Azerbaijani capital Baku.
The Russian newspapers, in particular, analyze the fact of conducting such a prestigious event and its importance for the member countries and entire region.
Some media do not hide that Russia is not pleased with such an organization, as they attach great importance to Euro-Asian organization (Euro-Asia Economic Cooperation). Value of the existence of GUAM for Russia has seriously raised, “Kommersant”’s G. Sisoyev notes. At his words, the union began to transfer to a structure, which stands on the way of aspiration of Moscow to control delivery of energy carriers of CIS to the West. Further, as Mr. Sisoyev writes that last year GUAM was cardinally reformed, and that the Organization has deeply decided to engage with the problems of energy security in order to successfully withstand against the oil-gas instruments used by Russia. According to the author, this has cardinally changed the situation for Moscow. Two member states of GUAM have the control over the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, which started to function last year, and is a serious alternative route of delivery of the Caspian oil to Europe. The Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline passes through Georgia and Azerbaijan. Besides, the Odessa-Brody-Plock oil pipeline to run through Ukraine to Poland bypassing Russia is to become a reality soon. Summing up the abovementioned, Mr. Sisoyev notes that GUAM soon can become a structure through which the West will receive alternative to Russia access to the CIS energy resources, and this will cause notable damage to the key interests of the current strategy of Moscow on raising its influence on world.
Cooperation of the GUAM countries may change the order in post-soviet space, and support by the United States and Europe of the Organization gives to it great importance and speaks of notable prospects, the Russian media notes.
