Media: Romania emerging as a key importer of Azerbaijani oil
Bucharest, January 23, AZERTAC
The Romanian analytical media platform Puterea.ro published an extensive article highlighting Romania’s rapidly growing role in Azerbaijan’s oil exports.
The article underlines that over the past year, the amount of crude oil imported by Romania from Azerbaijan has increased significantly, making the country one of Baku’s key trade partners in Europe.
Citing Puterea.ro, AZERTAC reports that Romania imported about 1.12 million tons of crude oil from Azerbaijan in 2025.
The publication describes these dynamics as a concrete result of Romania’s strategy to strengthen its energy security and diversify its supply sources.
Noting that the increase in import volumes is not limited to physical indicators, the article mentions that the amount Romania pays for Azerbaijani oil has also increased significantly, nearing $600 million. “This indicates that Baku-Bucharest energy ties are no longer a short-term market response, but a more long-term and envisaged cooperation, the article states.
Touching upon Romania's domestic oil refining industry, the analytical article notes that additional volumes of crude oil imported from Azerbaijan ensure the uninterrupted operation of Romanian refineries, maintaining the stability of the domestic market and export potential.
The author emphasizes that Romania's growing demand for Azerbaijani oil is not only an economic indicator but also conveys a political and strategic message. This trend confirms the emergence of the South Caucasus, particularly Azerbaijan, as a reliable partner in Bucharest's energy policy.
The analytical article underscores that Romania has become one of the key importers of Azerbaijani oil in a short period of time, adding that this process serves as clear example of the ongoing structural shifts in European energy markets and the strategic energy cooperation between Baku and Bucharest.
