Netflix drops official trailer for The Crown Season 6, Part 1

Baku, October 27, AZERTAC

On Thursday morning, Netflix released a two-minute teaser for the first part of season 6 of the hit drama inspired by the lives of the British royal family, according to People. Netflix previously said that The Crown will debut in two parts on November 16 and December 14, marking the first split premiere format since the series hit the streaming platform in 2016. Part 1 will feature four episodes and focus on the events surrounding Princess Diana’s tragic death — and the new trailer was all about the late Princess of Wales.

The clip opened with Elizabeth Debicki playing a piano in character as Diana, overlaid with footage of her sitting solo on the diving board of a yacht and dodging photographers with love interest Dodi Fayed (played by Khalid Abdalla).

The camera panned to a tabloid headline about the budding romance between the Princess of Wales and the son of billionaire Mohammed Al-Fayed, as a courtier explained to Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton) that the press interest probably wasn’t going away.

“I'm afraid, your Majesty, that interest in the princess' private life is unlikely to die down anytime soon,” they said, as the sovereign looked stiff.

The trailer rolled to Princess Diana on a yacht as photographers in a boat clamored to take her photo, and she said into a cell phone, “The press are on our tails constantly.”

All one wants is for that girl to find peace,” Queen Elizabeth said, as the camera panned to Diana singing in the car with a teen Prince William (Rufus Kampa).

The footage flashed to photographers chasing Dodi and Diana as they drove, and Prince William and Prince Harry (Fflyn Edwards) placing an emotional phone call to their mother.

“Mommy, you okay?” William asked. The trailer cut to the Princess of Wales addressing a press conference and walking into a room full of flowers, where she opened a note reading, “Paris next week?” — apparently from Dodi.

“I'm okay, It's just..it has all been a bit mad recently,” Diana replied.

In a dramatic turn, Queen Elizabeth told Princess Diana, “You've finally succeeded in turning this house upside down,” prompting the Princess of Wales to reply, “That was never my intention.”

The trailer fast-forwarded to what appears to be the aftermath of Diana's death and a heated conversation between the Queen and then-Prince Charles (Dominic West).

“What do people want from me?” the sovereign said.

“For you to be mother to the nation,” Charles fired back.

“You've seen the images on the television," he continued. "Diana gave people what they needed. All over the world, in their thousands. And they adored her for it.”

A montage quickly rolled of Princess Diana walking in a land mine, fans cheering to see her, Mohamed at a funeral, William crying and Diana looking anxious in the backseat of the car.

“This is going to be the biggest thing that any of us has ever seen,” West then said in character as Charles into a phone.

The Princess of Wales died in a car crash on Aug. 31, 1997, after being chased by photographers in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. PEOPLE previously confirmed that the moment of impact will be excluded from season 6 of The Crown.

On Wednesday, Variety reported that The Crown creator Peter Morgan “feared writing Princess Diana into the series and even considered avoiding her entirely,” adding that the showrunner was insistent her tragic death would not be seen on screen.

“Oh, God, we were never going to show the crash. Never,” Morgan told in the outlet in a new interview about the last chapter of the award-winning drama.

In another glimmer, the streamer released a new promotional poster of Debicki in character as Diana, making eye contact with the camera in a closeup photo.

While the show's finale remains a royal mystery, part 2 will feature six episodes airing on December 14. The last saga is expected to conclude multiple storylines, from Queen Elizabeth reflecting on her legacy, Charles and Camilla (Olivia Williams) taking the next step in their relationship and Prince William falling for a fellow collegian named Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) at the University of St. Andrews.
