November 20 marks Universal Children`s Day
Baku, November 20 (AZERTAC). The date, November 20, marks the day in which the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) in 1989. The UN calls on countries to observe Universal Children`s Day as a day to acknowledge the importance of actively promoting the welfare of the world`s children.
A key objective of Universal Children`s Day is to increase awareness of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Since its adoption by the United Nations, the Convention has been signed or ratified by more countries than any other international treaty.
Over the past decade, the Convention has proven to be a valuable tool for promoting the rights of children everywhere around the world.
At the 2013 UN Treaty Event, which were held 24-26, and 30 September and 1 October at New York Headquarters, United Nations officials urged Member States, which have not done so, to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Child and its three Optional Protocols, stressing that this is vital to protect children from abuse and mistreatment worldwide.
UNICEF, (the United Nations Children`s Fund), promotes and coordinates this special day, which also works towards improving children`s welfare. In some areas UNICEF holds events to draw particular attention to children`s rights. These may be to stimulate interest in the media around the world or to start nationwide campaigns, for instance on the importance of immunizations or breastfeeding.
