Romanian expert: Russia treats other nations with an outdated imperial mindset
Bucharest, June 29, AZERTAC
Renowned Romanian political commentator and international relations expert Teodora Marin told AZERTAC’s correspondent in Romania that Russia’s behavior toward other nations, particularly those in the former Soviet space, is rooted in an outdated imperial mindset.
Marin noted that by openly violating international law and human rights, Russia seeks to impose its hegemonic ambitions while ignoring the realities of the 21st century. “Russia still operates under the Leningrad doctrine of the last century. Its actions are driven not by law, but by the use of force, the silencing of opposition, and pressure on ethnic groups,” she said.
She emphasized that the consistent detention of Azerbaijani citizens in Yekaterinburg and the lack of transparent public explanation reflect Moscow’s aggressive and disrespectful attitude toward other nations. “The detention of Azerbaijanis without just cause is a serious violation of both international law and human rights. This is not only directed at Azerbaijani citizens but is part of a broader policy of pressuring regional peoples,” Marin added.
She noted that such actions further damage Russia’s international reputation and contribute to its growing isolation. “If the world were governed by the lawlessness of the Leningrad model, no international stability would be possible,” Marin stressed.
According to her, Europe and the international community must adopt a firmer and more principled stance against such violations and must not remain indifferent to the infringement of other nations’ rights. Marin pointed out that recent reports of increasing pressure and detentions of Azerbaijani citizens in Russia are deeply concerning and are being closely monitored by international observers.
