TURKEY NOT TO RECOGNIZE SO-CALLED “PRESIDENTIAL” ELECTIONS IN NAGORNO-KARABAKH
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a statement on the so-called presidential elections in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.
The statement says:
“Following the December 10, 2006 Constitutional referendum held in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan in violation of the international legal norms and contrary to the will of the global community, a conduct on July 19, 2007, of the so-called “presidential” elections in the region has been announced. These elections - as a part of efforts to unilaterally legitimate the illegal situation in Nagorno-Karabakh - are, at the same time, the obvious violation of international legal norms and resolutions of the UN Security Council and OSCE.
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict impedes establishment of peace, stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus and does not allow creating conditions for friendly neighborhood and cooperation. At the stage of OSCE Minsk Group-led ongoing peaceful negotiations to find a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem and Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict, conduct of the so called “presidential” elections in the occupied region is the step challenging the efforts towards resolution of the conflict in a peaceful manner. Turkey condemns this step violating Azerbaijan’s political unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity and does not recognize the results of the illegitimate “presidential” elections, which will have no legal effect in terms of international law.”
