U.S. professor: Toponyms associated with Azerbaijanis in Armenia have undergone significant changes
Baku, December 5, AZERTAC
“In the 20th century, Azerbaijanis were forcibly evicted from their homes and lands, and the geographical names were altered as well. These changed toponyms clearly demonstrate that Azerbaijanis were the original inhabitants of these territories and were later expelled,” said American professor Michael Martin Gunter during his remarks at a panel session titled “Tangible Heritage: Preserving the Physical Foundations of Return” held as part of the international conference “Cultural Heritage and the Right to Return.”
The American professor emphasized that toponyms associated with Azerbaijanis in Armenia have undergone significant changes, noting that this process took place both during the Soviet period and after 1991.
He highlighted the systematic renaming of Azerbaijani place names in Armenia to Armenian equivalents, describing it as a process of “Armenianization” carried out during the Soviet era and in the post-Soviet period.
