Baku, December 10, AZERTAC
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) held the Opening Ceremony for its sixth World Conference on Doping in Sport in Busan, Korea, which is convening the anti-doping community for engaging discussions and ushering in a new era for the global anti-doping program.
Azerbaijan was represented by Tahmina Taghi-zada, Executive Director of the Azerbaijan National Anti-Doping Agency (AMADA), and Nijat Amiraslanli, Head of Results Management and Investigation Department of AMADA.
The conference, attended by up to 2,000 participants from 191 countries, brought together athletes and representatives from the Sport Movement, Governments, National and Regional Anti-Doping Organizations, laboratories, service providers, researchers, and the media – all groups that are part of the collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport.
Participants assessed the progress made since the 2019 World Conference in Katowice, Poland, and the progress of the strengthened global anti-doping program.
In her remarks at the conference's plenary session themed "Supporting the Implementation of the New World Anti-Doping Code and International Standards," AMADA Executive Director Tahmina Taghi-zada emphasized the importance of the first WADA European Regional Symposium, which is scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan next year. Highlighting Azerbaijan's accomplishments in clean sport she underlined that Baku has established itself as a major sports hub, successfully hosting numerous prestigious events.
Inviting participants to the regional symposium in Baku, Tahmina Taghi-zada stated that the symposium will provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and fostering partnerships to strengthen the global anti-doping community.
The Busan-hosted conference concluded with the approval of the 2027 World Anti-Doping Code and International Standards by the Founding Board and Executive Committee, WADA's governing bodies. The "Busan Declaration" was also adopted, emphasizing the importance of clean sport and calling on all anti-doping stakeholders to effectively interact and support athletes.
The new anti-doping rules will cover prohibited substances, therapeutic exemptions, doping control procedures, results processing, and data protection. The revised 2027 World Anti-Doping Code is effective as of 1 January 2027 and will remain in force until 2033.
