BAKU MENDELEEV OLYMPIAD WRAPS UP
Baku, May 4 (AZERTAC). The Azerbaijani capital-hosted 44th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad has ended with a solemn award-giving ceremony.
The Olympiad saw participation of 87 secondary school students representing 14 countries, including 12 from Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan`s Agil Alizadeh, a student at the Lankaran Private Turkish Lyceum, has won gold medal of the Olympiad whose jury panel included well-known scientists.
Speaking to the award-giving ceremony, Azeri education minister Misir Mardanov said top three winners this year would earn the right to study at Toronto University.
“In addition, winners will be granted the right to study at the chemistry department in Azerbaijani universities,” said the minister.
Valery Lunin, a dean at the Moscow State University, said the Baku Olympiad was “a brilliant opportunity for the participants to familiarize themselves with Azerbaijan`s rich culture, history and beautiful nature”.
Lunin praised the Azerbaijani President`s contribution to organizing the Olympiad on “such a high level”.
“Mr. Aliyev vowed the Baku contest will be one of the best in the history of Mendeleev Olympiads. And this Olympiad was a really remarkable event. I highly praise the way it was organized.”
The International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad has been held since 1998, with the Azeri capital last time hosting the contest in 2000.
So far, Azerbaijan has claimed a total of 70 medals. Some 25 Azeri gold-winners have earned the right to study at the chemistry department of the Moscow State University.
