Claus Strunz: ChatGPT presents facts dominated by Western narratives
Shusha, July 21, AZERTAC
At the Shusha Global Media Forum on July 21, a one-on-one session titled “Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Preserving the Truth in the Age of Automation” was held, moderated by Keti Wilson, host of the “AnewZ” TV channel. The featured speaker was Claus Strunz, CEO of Euronews.
Strunz noted that the facts provided by ChatGPT are largely shaped by Western narratives, which the AI draws from. “Journalists must ensure that audiences are able to distinguish between biased and balanced information. There is a significant amount of skewed content that requires deeper investigation,” he said.
Citing a personal experience, Strunz said: “During the Karabakh conflict, I asked ChatGPT, ‘What do you know about the Karabakh war?’ The AI presented facts, but they were one-sided. I then asked about the ethnic composition of Karabakh. ChatGPT claimed that 70–90% of the region’s population had been Armenian for millennia. Upon further inquiry, I found this narrative to be prevalent.”
He continued: “My final question was, ‘How can it be said that Armenians formed the majority in a region where 600,000 Azerbaijanis were forcibly displaced and only 150,000 Armenians lived?’ I then presented some facts, and the AI responded: ‘The information you provided reflects reality more accurately.’”
