Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Canada Fakhraddin Gurbanov met with Canadian Senators Rod Zimmer, a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, on Transport and Communications and National Security and Defense, as well as Anne Cools, a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
The Ambassador informed the senators about Azerbaijan’s history, its ongoing reforms, investment potential and economic projects.
Fakhraddin Gurbanov said his country places a particular emphasis on development of its relationships with Canada.
He stressed he believes the opening of Canada’s embassy in Baku will give the impetus to further deepening of Azerbaijan-Canada relations.
Mr. Gurbanov also said Azerbaijan now leads the world in Gross Domestic Product growth rate.
On the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, the Ambassador said Armenia occupied twenty percent of his country’s territory forcing over one million Azerbaijanis to flee their homelands.
Rod Zimmer said he will join the Canada-Azerbaijan interparliamentary friendship group.
The Senator said he will invite the businessmen of Canada’s Manitoba province, which he represents at the Senate, to invest in Azerbaijan’s economy.
