CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON HIGHLIGHTS INTERNATIONAL ROLE OF AZERBAIJAN
Washington, May 15 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan`s important role in the region and world was stressed at a conference on "Azerbaijan and the West: Strategic Partnership at Eurasia`s Crossroads" held here at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
The meeting organized by the Jamestown Foundation was addressed by Vladimir Socor, Senior Fellow of the Jamestown Foundation, Brenda Shaffer, President of the Foreign Policy Section of the American Political Science Association, Daniel P. Fata ,former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy
Experts noted existence of the section 907 of the Freedom Support Act damages US-Azerbaijan relations. They shared the idea that there is room for developing US-Azerbaijan ties even more. The sides can expand military cooperation by signing a document similar to that clinched between US and Georgia.
Experts stressed Azerbaijan government and public support a peace policy despite the fact that 20% of Azerbaijani lands is under occupation and about a million Azerbaijani citizens became refugees and IDPs.
Speakers noted US Congress`s providing aid to Nagorno-Karabakh and official Washington`s supporting efforts to open Turkey –Armenia border does not only impede resolution of the conflict but also contradict US interests in the region.
