Pakistan and Uzbekistan signed multiple agreements on Wednesday aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration across various sectors, including defense, technology, technical training, and youth empowerment.
The documents were signed during Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif's official visit to Uzbekistan, which was made at the invitation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Both leaders witnessed the ceremony as officials from both countries exchanged the documents formalizing agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for cooperation in different fields.
Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Uzbekistan's Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov exchanged documents covering agreements in visa-free travel for diplomatic passport holders, military intelligence, internal affairs, professional and technical training, and diplomatic training.
An additional intergovernmental agreement was signed between both sides to collaborate in scientific research, technology, and innovation. Uzbekistan's Deputy Prime Minister Khodjayev Jamshid and Pakistani Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan exchanged these documents, while ministers from both sides signed several other agreements.
Following the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Sharif and President Mirziyoyev signed a joint declaration on the outcomes of the Pakistani Prime Minister's visit to Tashkent, as well as protocols establishing a High Level Strategic Cooperation Council.
The two leaders also held a bilateral meeting prior to the signing of the MoUs. At a joint press conference afterward, President Mirziyoyev stated: "We came to conclusions on different spheres, and mutual trade turnover has exceeded $400 million. We have plans to increase that to $2 billion."
