Trump invited to visit China after ‘very positive’ call with Xi
Baku, June 5, AZERTAC
Donald Trump has agreed to visit China after a “very positive” phone call with Chinese premier Xi Jinping, signaling progress in their bitter dispute over tariffs, according to Telegraph.
The US president wrote on Truth Social: “I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi, of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal. The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries.”
Mr Trump indicated that there had been a breakthrough in exports of rare earth critical minerals, which are needed by US manufacturers. Restrictions on their exports had led the US president to accuse China of “severely” violating an earlier agreement.
He said: “During the conversation, President Xi graciously invited the First Lady and me to visit China, and I reciprocated. As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing.”
Formal trade negotiations between the two countries will now begin, the US president said, with Scott Bessent, the US Treasury secretary, Howard Lutnick, the Secretary of Commerce, and trade envoy Jamieson Greer representing the US.
The call happened at the request of Mr Trump, Xinhua reported.
It comes after Mr Trump said in a Truth Social post this week that he was struggling to reach a deal with the Chinese premier, having previously heralded a “total reset” of US/China relations earlier in May.
He said: “I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is very tough, and extremely hard to make a deal with!!!”
The two leaders have been at loggerheads for weeks over tit-for-tat tariffs that reached as high as 145pc (levied by the US on China) and 125pc (levied on the US by China in response).
A truce was agreed which reduced them to 30pc and 10pc respectively.
Chinese imports to the US hit their lowest point since 2020 in April, official data showed this week.
