Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have agreed to bolster strategic relations between Japan and the United Arab Emirates.
Abe and Crown Prince Mohamed issued a joint statement after meeting in Abu Dhabi on Monday.
They agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in such fields as energy, advanced science and technology, defense and economics.
The statement says a Japanese rocket will send a UAE observation satellite into orbit this year. It also calls for deeper defense cooperation, including exports of Japanese transport aircraft and other defense equipment.
The 2 countries also signed an agreement aimed at promoting mutual investment.
At the meeting, Abe expressed gratitude for the UAE's decision to extend a Japanese oil developer's interest in an offshore field in Abu Dhabi for 40 years.
Abe and Crown Prince Mohamed also discussed regional issues such as the Iran nuclear deal and the conflict in Syria.
The UAE is the first leg of Abe's Middle East tour, ahead of visits to Jordan, Israel and Palestine.
