As part of her official visit to Georgia, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met Monday with Chairman of the country’s Parliament Shalva Papuashvili.
Shalva Papuashvili fondly recalled his visits to Azerbaijan, saying that the intensive exchange of trips and the close contacts had helped promote broader relations. He also thanked the Azerbaijani government for the support provided to Georgia.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova conveyed her congratulations on the election to the Georgian parliament and Shalva Papuashvili’s re-election.
Noting that Azerbaijan and Georgia are friendly and partner countries, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis said that these friendly relations stem, first of all, from the will of the two peoples. “Our peoples have lived in an atmosphere of friendship, brotherhood and good neighborliness for centuries." Speaker Sahiba Gafarova quoted President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan as saying that the political bonds between Azerbaijan and Georgia could serve as an example for all the neighbours.
The parties noted that the Azerbaijani-Georgian friendship and strategic partnership had brought forth opportunities to carry into life major energy and transport projects. Those projects serve the two sides’ national interests, whilst also fostering stability and development in the South Caucasus.
The meeting also highlighted the high-level relations between the two friendly and neighboring countries that are successfully continued at the parliamentary level. The two Speakers described the inter-parliamentary ties as an important component of the bilateral and multilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia, underscoring that the very fruitful cooperation had been established between the two countries’ legislative bodies.
During the conversation, the sides also exchanged views on the situation in the region, the importance of ensuring peace and stability, as well as other issues of mutual interest.
