AZERBAIJAN – TRUE ALLY AND STALWART PARTNER
Azerbaijani servicemen outnumber other nations securing the dam Gatit that locates in the western Iraq.
The newspaper dedicated the article to Azerbaijani peacemakers serving in Iraq. According to Glenn Page, there was no negative incident at the dam.
A small squad of soldiers is the second Azerbaijani peacemaking contingent in Iraq. Many of Azerbaijanis have served along with American soldiers before. According to battalion commander F. Mammadov, he served with American soldiers in Cosova before coming here.
Captain F. Mammadov noted that Iraq and Azerbaijan practice the same religion but, in spite of this, we are soldiers first. We rank our soldier's duty above all. I enjoy staying with American soldiers here. The weekly emphasizes that Azerbaijan has become a true ally in a war on terrorism pursued by the US.
Having been one of the fist countries to respond US’s call for help in securing Iraq in the transition period Azerbaijan sent 150 servicemen to serve side-by-side with Americans.
Thus, Iraq turned out to be the third country after Afghanistan and Cosova where Azerbaijani peacemaking contingent as a part of international forces fights for maintenance of peace, freedom and security.
Following September 11 events, Azerbaijan expressed its solid support to the US and offered its help to anti-terrorism coalition led by the US. Azerbaijan offers its air corridor and bases for the US and exchange data with American law-enforcement bodies.
Long before September 11 events, Azerbaijan helped the US investigate explosion of US embassy in the Eastern Africa in 1998 and joint work with the US embassy in Baku towards protecting the embassy from terrorist acts.
