NEWS CONFERENCE OF FOREIGN MINISTERS OF AZERBAIJAN AND TURKEY
Head of the MFA of Turkey and Deputy Prime Minister of this country Abdullah Gul expressing his condolence on passing of the national leader of the people of Azerbaijan President Heydar Aliyev. He in particular, said: “Together with the Azerbaijani people I grieve on demise of the great statesman of Azerbaijan Republic and the entire Turkic world, President Heydar Aliyev, and express my condolence to all the people of Azerbaijan. Head of the foreign policy department of Turkey especially underlined that to participate at the ceremonies of funeral and farewell of the outstanding son of Azerbaijani people, the high rank officials of Turkey including President Ahmed Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Baku. Noting that he visited the grave of the genius leader at the Alley of Honors, Abdullah Gul stressed: “The Turkic world lost the esteemed and beloved statesman. Let Allah rest his soul in peace”.
At words of the Minister, mutual respect and love, experienced by the peoples of the two countries have deep common historical roots.
Touching upon the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the Turkish Minister stated that Ankara expresses concern in the continued occupation of the Azerbaijani lands by the Armenian armed forces.
In his turn, foreign minister of Azerbaijan Vilayat Guliyev, speaking of the conclusions of the first day of visit of the foreign minister of Turkey to Baku, called the held meetings fruitful and useful. “The visit is the first official visit of Mr. Abdullah Gul, and I am very pleased that I have opportunity to meet him on the native Azerbaijani land”, Minister Guliyev said.
At words of the foreign minister of Azerbaijan, in the course of the first day of the visit, a range of issues both of regional and international character, were discussed. He stressed that Turkey and Azerbaijan should constantly develop their relations in the political, economic and cultural spheres.
In conclusion, heads of the foreign policy departments of the two countries noted that they also focused issues connected with the forthcoming summer summit of NATO in Istanbul.
