OSCE MEDIA REPRESENTATIVE TO HOLD SEMINAR ON FREEDOM ON THE INTERNET
Delegates from the 55 OSCE participating States are meeting international experts from academia, NGOs and civil rights groups to discuss potential problems and dangers that the free flow of information on the Internet might face.
“An important challenge for my Office is to identify ways in which to counter hate speech without restricting freedom of expression on the Internet and without curtailing the civil rights of Internet users,” said Miklos Haraszti.
Among the experts will be Yaman Akdeniz (University of Leeds and Director of cyber-rights.org), David Banisar (Leeds University, privacy.org), Morris Lipson (Article 19, London), Karin Spaink (freelance writer, Bits of Freedom, Amsterdam), and Jelena Surяulija (Internewsё Belgrade). The topics include Internet and Regulation in Transition States, Global Policy Disorder: Governing illegal and harmful content on the Internet, and International Networks vs. National Laws.
“A number of conferences and documents have shown that there is a need to address regulatory issues on the Internet, but that there is a considerable degree of uncertainty about how to tackle this problem,” Haraszti added.
The Seminar serves as a preparatory workshop to develop the agenda for a major Internet conference in Amsterdam on 10 and 11 September, organized by the Media Representative.
