Polls open in Spanish general election
Baku, June 26, AZERTAC
More than 36 millions Spaniards are voting to elect lawmakers for Parliament and representatives for the Senate on Sunday in Spain's repeat general elections, according to EFE news agency.
The elections had to be called after politicians failed to form a coalition agreement when no party obtained an absolute majority general elections held December 20, 2015.
Years of domination by the Popular Party (PP), currently led by acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and the Socialist Party (PSOE), led by Pedro Sanchez, were disrupted in the Dec. elections by upstart left-wing party Podemos (We can), headed by former politics lecturer, Pablo Iglesias, and the business-friendly Ciudadanos (Citizens' Party), led by Albert Rivera.
The newcomer parties harnessed public discontent after years of austerity, sky-high unemployment and a series of corruption scandals that engulfed both traditional parties.
