PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV ATTENDS VILNIUS ENERGY SECURITY CONFERENCE
The Energy Security Conference 2007: “Responsible Energy for Responsible Partners” continued in Vilnius on Thursday.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the event.
The conference was opened by Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus who made the report entitled “The Proposals on Development of External EU Energy Policy”.
Adamkus said the Vilnius conference is addressing challenges of energy security.
“Global challenges need global solutions”, he said.
Polish leader Lech Kaczynski stressed the necessity to enhance cooperation among the Caspian, Black Sea and Baltic regions.
President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso welcomed the conference participants by video link.
Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev expressed his gratitude to Lithuanian counterpart Valdas Adamkus for organizing the conference, and noted its importance in terms of expanding energy cooperation among the Caspian, Black Sea and Baltic regions.
Ilham Aliyev said Azerbaijan`s oil industry is rapidly developing, and his country`s hydrocarbon reserves are enough to meet domestic demand for about 150 years.
He also stressed that this year Azerbaijan started exporting Shahdeniz gas to Georgia and Turkey.
“Azerbaijan which seeks expansion of cooperation with the European Union is ready to make its contribution to providing energy security in Europe”, Ilham Aliyev added.
President Aliyev emphasized that the Caspian region is a new alternative source for transporting oil and gas to Europe.
He said Azerbaijan has multi-branched infrastructure to deliver energy resources to the world markets.
Other speakers at the conference included Presidents Traian Basescu of Romania and Viktor Yuschenko of Ukraine.
