PRESIDENTS OF AZERBAIJAN AND LITHUANIA GIVE JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE
Following the ceremony of signing intergovernmental documents, Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Valdas Adamkus of Lithuania gave a joint press conference.
President Adamkus noted that relations between Azerbaijan and Lithuania have been intensively developed for the short period of time. “We had a wide-ranging exchange of views on the issues concerning the expansion of bilateral cooperation, including in energy sphere,” he said.
“Lithuania is always ready to provide assistance to Azerbaijan and share its experience in terms of integration into the EuroAtlantic structures,” the Lithuanian President stated. The documents signed in the course of the Azerbaijani President’s official visit to Lithuania will serve the expansion of the bilateral cooperation. “No disagreements exist between our countries,” said Valdas Adamkus. Today’s dialogue with the Azerbaijani leader, he noted, will be continued at the Vilnius Energy Summit to take place in October this year.
President Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan attaches great significance to the relations with Lithuania. “Lithuania and Azerbaijan share common views. There are no problems between us, and our relations will further deepen,” he said.
The Azerbaijani leader noted that Lithuania supports Azerbaijan on the way of integration into the EuroAtlantic structures. “Our state’s relations with the EuroAtlantic structures are on a high level. Azerbaijan is participating in the European New Neighborhood program. We have signed the Memorandum of Understanding on strategic energy partnership. Our country gives priority to energy security issues.”
President Ilham Aliyev thanked his Lithuanian counterpart Valdas Adamkus for the support of the fair position of Azerbaijan in the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and expressed confidence that the problem will be solved in the framework of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. He also expressed confidence that this visit “will bring our countries closer, and elevate our relations on a higher level.”
President Adamkus, for his part, suggested his country’s involvement in the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as peacemaker that, he said, also requires consent of the Armenian side.
President Ilham Aliyev also noted that the two countries have political will to develop their economic relations.
The Azerbaijani leader said he will also visit the Lithuanian seaport of Klaipeda. “It will be an important moment, which will help with realization of new transport projects in Azerbaijan, in particular, construction of a new sea port,” he said.
The President pointed out that the embassies opened in Baku and Vilnius should make their contributions to deepening the Azerbaijani-Lithuanian ties. He also stressed that the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad project should also play its role in expansion of cooperation between the Caspian-Black-and-Baltic Sea regions.
