Russia’s recent policy toward Azerbaijan contradicts alliance agreement - NGO Chairman
Baku, July 1, AZERTAC
“The attack on Azerbaijani families in Yekaterinburg, involving violence and killings, marks the next phase of a systematic campaign orchestrated by the highest levels of the Russian state. Prior to this, Russia had already taken consistent steps undermining the allied relations between the two countries. Its failure to act appropriately following the downing of an Azerbaijani plane was a deliberate attempt to strain bilateral ties,” said Agil Jamal, Chairman of the “Common Values” Public Union, in a statement to AZERTAC.
Jamal recalled that three years ago, a specific clause in the “Declaration on Allied Interaction between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation,” signed by President Vladimir Putin, committed both countries to refrain from any actions that could harm their strategic partnership and allied relations.
“Russia’s recent policy toward Azerbaijan contradicts both bilateral relations and the alliance agreement. Moreover, violence against peaceful civilians constitutes a blatant violation of international obligations. Azerbaijani society, including non-governmental organizations, is expressing strong outrage against the ethnic-based vandalism committed in Yekaterinburg. I believe these reactions must persist until those who ordered and carried out this massacre and violence are held accountable and appropriate measures are taken. The Azerbaijani state and human rights organizations should bring this act of violence to the international legal arena. It is vital to implement effective measures to ensure that our compatriots living in Russia do not face similar incidents again,” the NGO chairman emphasized.
