TADEF Deputy Chairman: The lawlessness in Yekaterinburg must not be repeated
Ankara, June 29, AZERTAC
“The unlawful actions of law enforcement in Russia’s Sverdlovsk oblast must be thoroughly investigated, and all individuals involved in the illegal acts that led to the deaths and injuries of ethnic Azerbaijanis must be held accountable,” said Serdar Ünsal, Deputy Secretary General of the Türkiye-Azerbaijan Friendship Associations Federation (TADEF), in an interview with AZERTAC.
Ünsal strongly condemned the events in Yekaterinburg, suggesting that the investigative actions against Azerbaijan’s diaspora representatives may have been orchestrated. “Individuals suspected of a crime should face justice before the law, not become victims of law enforcement. The actions of Russia’s relevant authorities, including the use of torture, are unacceptable,” he emphasized.
The TADEF deputy chairman recalled instances of hostility and hatred toward Turks and Azerbaijanis in Russia, not ruling out the possible involvement of radical elements and Armenian lobby groups. He stressed that Russia’s large Azerbaijani diaspora has the same rights as other citizens: “Discrimination based on ethnicity is unacceptable for any state,” Ünsal said, urging people not to remain silent in the face of such pressure and persecution.
“Human rights organizations must actively participate in investigating the events in Sverdlovsk. If we ignore this lawlessness, such tragedies will recur and increase. I extend my condolences to the families of the deceased and injured and to the entire Azerbaijani people,” he added.
