Turkey opens temporary checkpoint on Georgian border
Baku, September 6 (AZERTAC). A temporary checkpoint will be opened on the Turkish-Georgian border to boost the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.
A relevant agreement was signed between Ziya Altunaldiz, an advisor at the Turkish Ministry for Customs and Trade, and Jambul Ebanoidze, Georgian Deputy Finance Minister.
After the singing ceremony both said the checkpoint would be part of the construction of a tunnel on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway.
The checkpoint was called the Iron Silk Road for vehicles to cross.
The new checkpoint is scheduled to be opened on the Turkish-Georgian border at the Aktas Village to ensure the growing trade turnover and passenger traffic.
The sides also reached agreement to open new checkpoints at the Childir and Artvin Borchka villages of Ardahan province of Turkey in 2013.
The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will increase the flow of container, bulk and other types of cargo from Asia to Europe. The Marmaris project envisaging the construction of a tunnel under the Bosporus will be implemented during this period. This will open a railway communication to Europe.
It is expected that about 30 million tons of cargo per year will be transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway annually. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will have a direct route to the European rail network.
