2011 Tango Festival kicks off in Buenos Aires
Baku, August 17 (AZERTAC). Tourists wandering the streets of Buenos Aires during the next two weeks should not be surprised if they are treated to an impromptu tango. The 2011 Tango Festival and Dance World Cup, which runs August 16th-30th, draws musicians, artists and dancers from all over the world. All concerts, shows, dance classes and other festival activities are free and open to the general public.
This year`s festival is spread out over the city, with events taking place at the Centro de Exposiciones in the Recoleta barrio, CCC Teatro 25 de Mayo in the Villa Urquiza barrio, Teatro de La Ribera in the La Boca barrio, and Luna Park in the Centro.
The 2011 festival features tango greats such as tango poet Horacio Ferrer and singer Amelita Baltar, along with new talent in the tango world, such as electronic tango bands like Ultratango.
This year`s festival is a few days shorter in duration than last year`s event but it still packs a tango punch with over 150 live shows, classes, conferences and other activities featuring over 500 national and international artists.
The festival features free tango classes for all levels, documentary films, exhibitions, and an abundance of dance and musical performances by some of Buenos Aires` best tango ensembles such as Orchestra Tipica El Provenir and tango legends such as Horacio Ferrer, known to habitues of San Telmo`s cafe La Poesia for his work with Astor Piazzolla.
The event`s grand final is the World Tango Championship, pitting 400 of the world`s best tango dancers against each other in a competition to win worldwide prestige and an AR$20,000 (US$4,800) prize.
