INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “PROTECTION OF POLITICAL RIGHTS IN AZERBAIJAN– NEW CRITERIONS” WRAPS UP
The two-day international conference “Protection of Political Rights in Azerbaijan – New Criterions” has wrapped up today in Baku.
The conferees - 70 experts and lawyers from 27 countries, including 29 MPs from the Council of Europe, and Azerbaijan’s officials - discussed a wide range of issues, including current state and prospects of legal and judicial reforms in Azerbaijan, protection of freedom of speech and press, and political rights.
They discussed various topics, including “individual and public aspects of protection of civil and political rights”, “development of judicial system in Azerbaijan”, “practical approach to protection of freedom of speech and press”, “legal bases of mass media’s activities in Azerbaijan”.
The participants praised Azerbaijan’s work to strengthen the protection of human rights in last few years.
Speakers noted Azerbaijan had honored all media-related obligations to the Council of Europe, and that the country`s mass media legislation meets modern European standards.
Representative of Azerbaijan Justice Ministry Azer Jafarov spoke of development of judicial system in the country.
Leader of Belgium-Azerbaijan Interparliamentary friendship group Alan Destex said the conference will contribute to solution of human rights problems in Azerbaijan.
German expert on international law Klaus Diter Snarraf said the conference provides opportunities to expand relations. He noted Azerbaijan is making great efforts to implement all documents and conventions related to human rights. The expert stressed that Azerbaijan is important country not only for the region, but also for Europe.
Member of Slovenian parliament Zmago Jelincic said the conference proved the existence of democratic system in Azerbaijan.
At the end of the event, conferees adopted a Baku declaration.
