KOICA President visits Azerbaijan
Baku, March 20 (AZERTAC).The President of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Kim Young Mok has paid a three-day visit to Azerbaijan.
Mr. Kim met chairman of Azersu company Gorkhmaz Huseynov to discuss the progress and outcome of the KOICA-Azersu joint project “A Total Solution for Water Shortage on the Absheron Peninsula in Azerbaijan: Establishment of Water Supply and Sanitation System in Kurdakhani Settlement in the Absheron Peninsula”.
The Kurdakhani project is designed to solve the problem of water shortage in Absheron Peninsula as a part of East Asia Climate Partnership. The budget of the grant project is 26.18 million USD by the KOICA.
Mr. Huseynov said that the Azerbaijani government is conducting various projects to establish water supply and sewerage system projects for the population in and around Baku. He mentioned the Azerbaijani President pays great attention to water and sewerage system, and thanked the Korean government for supporting Azerbaijan`s development strategies.
Mr. Kim said improving water supply system in the Kurdakhani site will ensure the local population`s access to clean water resources, which will greatly improve the quality of their lives. He further said that if the polluted water resources are effectively managed in the future, it can prevent environmental pollution and significantly contribute to local population`s health conditions.
Mr. Kim said that related to the Kurdakhani project, the implementation of commitment was signed with Eximbank of Korea last week (March 11) on the expected Project “Installation of waste water cleaning devices of Pirshagi (43.5 million USD)”. If this project is conducted in conjunction with KOICA Projects, the effectiveness of the project will be doubled and it can be a representative ODA landmark in water field.
The KOICA President said that 70% of the Kurdakhani project is completed. He wished that the project gets completed as soon as possible so that local people can be supplied with clean water. In addition, he hoped that through this business opportunity a wide range of bilateral cooperation will be expanded in the water resources sector.
During the conversation both sides agreed that the two countries should continue their development in water resources management and decided to maintain close cooperation in future.
