Kyiv to host conference dedicated to 25th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear disaster
Kyiv, April 20 (AZERTAC). A delegation led by deputy minister of labor and social protection of population Natig Mammadov will take part in the international scientific conference titled “Chernobyl, 25 Years On: Safety for the Future” to be organized in Kyiv, Ukraine, in remembrance of the 25th anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
On 26 April 2011, Ukraine marks the 25th anniversary of the disastrous accident at Chernobyl NPP. It was an incident that affected not just Ukraine, Belarus and Russia but the whole world, changing not just the communities involved but attitudes to nuclear power on a global scale.
The conference to be held in Kyiv on 20-22 April, 2011, is intended to be a forum for the scrutiny of the disaster mitigation measures implemented after the Chernobyl disaster, and the examination of how the lessons learned can be used to improve nuclear and radiation safety around the world.
The Conference will focus on following problems: reducing nuclear and radiation risks; improving safety in the future; consequences of nuclear and radiation accidents for the population, health and the environment; development of emergency plans, public awareness and involvement in emergency planning; post-accident radiation monitoring; social and economic development of areas affected by the disaster, etc.
Participants will be provided with relevant documents and materials available from the Conference Secretariat during registration.
The Conference is organized by the Government of Ukraine in co-operation with the Government of the Republic of Belarus, Government of Russia, European Commission, Council of Europe, Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (France), Society for Technical and Nuclear Safety GRS (Germany).
An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations International Children`s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) provided support for the conference.
