PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV ATTENDS CICA SUMMIT IN ALMATY
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the summit.
The first summit CICA took place in Almaty in 2002. Member states of the organization are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, People’s Republic of China, Egypt, India, Israel, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and South Korea (admitted at the present summit). Representatives of Indonesia, Japan, Ukraine, Malaysia, the United States, and Vietnam as well as such international organizations as the United Nations, the OSCE, and the League of Arab States are attending the summit as observers.
The summit began with opening remarks by President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia, Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan, Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, Emomali Rahmonov of Tajikistan, Kurmanbek Bakiyev of Kyrgyzstan, as well as Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkey Abdullah Gul, Deputy Prime Minister of Israel Shimon Peres, representatives of observer-states and international organizations addressed the summit.
The member-states signed a document to establish a CICA Secretariat with headquarters in Almaty. The Secretariat will consist of official representatives from each member-state.
Jandos Asanov, former head of department in the Kazakh Foreign Ministry was elected as Chief Executive of the Secretariat.
They also adopted the final summit declaration covering fight against terrorism and separatism, prevention of weapons of mass destruction proliferation, solution of regional conflicts, improvement of intergovernmental dialogue and other issues.
