REPRESENTATIVE OF WASHINGTON DISSATISFIED WITH INATTENTION OF NATO TO SOUTHERN CAUCASUS
As the correspondent of AzerTAj informs, similar opinion adheres Vladimir Sokor known as analyst on the post-Soviet space of the Institute of Strategic and Political Researches in Washington. Speaking at the Institute of the Central Asia and Caucasus of the John Hopkins University about the influence of the NATO Summit on our region, the analyst has not hidden the regret concerning the Istanbul meeting.
According to Vladimir Sokor, the Secretary General of Alliance Yaap de Hoop Scheffer in the speech titled “New Atlanticism in XXI century” has not mentioned Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan, and in the communiquй of Summit the region of Southern Caucasus has been mentioned superficially. The short citation included in the document “The decision of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan to develop the individual plan of partner activity is welcomed” can be reflected in mood of the countries of the Southern Caucasus. Vladimir Sokor is confident that it would be wrong to compare Georgia and Azerbaijan to passive Uzbekistan in this question. The similar attitude of the NATO, the Washington analyst connects with the Russian factor. The policy of the Alliance “Russia - the first priority” prevents the NATO to approach more attentively to strategically important Black Sea and Southern - Caucasian regions and undertaking here corresponding steps.
Having touched results of the Summit, Vladimir Sokor has noted, that the North Atlantic Alliance, increasing power in Afghanistan, cannot achieve here big changes. However, its active presence on the Southern Caucasus can bring more results. As the states in region differ in policy of pro-Western orientation and tendency to the NATO.
