Death toll in Domodedovo explosion reaches 35
Baku, January 24 (AZERTAC). The death toll in Monday`s Domodedovo Airport explosion has risen to 35, airport spokeswoman Yelena Galanova said.
She said 46 people had been hospitalised.
However the Ministry of Health and Social Development said 58 injured people had been taken to hospitals.
Police have begun a search for three men in connection with the terrorist act.
The National Anti-terrorist Committee (NAC) refrained from comment. “We do not comment on this until the end of the investigation,” a NAC official said.
Earlier, a source close to the investigation told Itar-Tass that investigators were checking information on three men, presumably residents of the Moscow region, who could have had a bomb that exploded.
“Video cameras captured three suspicious men. They entered Domodedovo through the hall where there are no metal detectors. The three men were said to have been stopped by police for an ID check. An explosion occurred after that,” a source in law enforcement agencies said.
Another source said pieces of the body that may belong to the suicide bomber. At the same time, he could not say that was the suicide bomber. “One should be very careful with terms, including the term `suicide bomber` until the relevant examination is carried out,” he said, adding that “a person might have been used without his knowing” or “he might have been simply carrying an explosive device”.
“The investigation will answer all questions,” the official said.
However a source close to the investigation said that the terrorist act was staged by a suicide bomber.
“The circumstances of the explosion suggest that. In addition, the explosive device was most likely filled with pieces of metal as borne out by a large number of injured people and the nature of the injuries. The explosion occurred outside the control zone, at the exit from the green channel where no metal detectors are installed,” the official said.
At the time of the explosion, there were a large number of people in the airport because about 30 flights were due to arrive, including 15 international ones.
Investigators are checking information on men, presumably residents of the Moscow region, who could have detonated a bomb at the airport.
The explosion occurred at the baggage claim area in the international arrivals section of the airport.
