NATO, AZERBAIJAN: SUCCESSFUL CO-OP
``If Azerbaijan increases the number of its peacekeeping soldiers in Kosovo and Afghanistan, NATO will welcome it,`` Robert Simmons, NATO Secretary General`s special representative for the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia told a press conference in Baku, March 16.
Senior NATO official said NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation has been successfully expanded within the last years. He pointed out that Azerbaijani President’s visits to the NATO`s headquarters and visits of high ranked representatives have promoted the mutual relations between NATO and Azerbaijan.
As R. Simmons stated, during his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, Azeri President has expressed his satisfaction with the level of NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation.
Touching upon the implementation of the Individual Partnership Action Plan in Azerbaijan, a senior NATO official said the process covering all directions of the plan is being carried out in a high level.
He added that assessment on implementation of the plan would be conducted based on the results of the visit.
Touching upon his meetings in Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence, National Security and Emergency Situations, special representative said that he would visit some companies of the Ministry of Defence, State Border Service and Internal Troops of the Ministry of Interior Affairs in order to familiar with military reforms carried out within the frameworks of the Individual Partnership Action Plan.
``Though NATO does not participate in settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, it supports negotiations carried on by the OSCE Minsk Group1s mediation``, the NATO official said.
