Ankara Film Festival turns spotlight on East
Baku, January 29 (AZERTAC). According to todayszaman.com, the Ankara International Film Festival will turn the spotlight on the East and how it is represented on the silver screen in its 24th edition this spring.
The 11-day festival, scheduled for March 14-24, will be held under the main theme “Images of the East”, the Ankara-based World Mass Media Research Foundation said in a written statement. Accordingly, the festival`s program will feature films from near and Middle Eastern countries in a special section.
“The East, which still waits to be seen and understood, is not only a close neighbor of the West, but also the foundation of Western civilization and languages. However, in the past few centuries, the East has been made invisible while the West became the part that has succeeded in delivering its cultural identities and messages to masses,” the statement read. “In order to shed light on this cultural divide, this year the festival will present a 10-piece selection from countries whose cinemas are practically unknown in Turkey,” it added.
Films in the selection will focus on themes ranging from the Arab Spring to Orientalism and from immigration to social issues, the statement added, although it didn`t specify any of the titles. The selection will include films from Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
