German Fashion Designer Creates Clothing from Milk
Baku, October 1 (AZERTAC). German biologist and fashion designer (there`s a combo you don`t hear too often) Anke Domaske has been making waves in the fashion world with her clothing line Mademoiselle Chi Chi that features garments made from MILK.
Domaske and her Hannover-based team have found a way to turn substandard sour milk into an environmentally-friendly yarn that they then manipulate into fun, flowing designs. A solid protein is extracted from the milk and spun into yarn before being transformed into clothing. Domaske considers the milk fibre to be a practical alternative to cotton as it can be manufactured without any pesticides or chemicals and only takes an hour to produce.
“Milk is underrated because people only view it as a food-stuff. But you can make a lot more from it - milk is a wonderful, natural raw material,” Domaske said in an interview with DW-TV, “The special thing about milk fibre is that is has a lovely silky feel. The fabric falls wonderfully, and it`s cheaper than silk. We tested it for many years before we came up with the ideal recipe… it`s a bit like baking in a way”.
“I`ve always managed the balancing act between science and fashion very well,” she says. The success of her eco-friendly approach proves that the interdisciplinary approach has certainly paid off. After launching her first collection in 2003, the milk clothing has gone from strength to strength. Domaske showed at Milan fashion week in 2010, has been featured on Germany`s Next Top Model and some of the hottest celebrities - namely Mischa Barton - have been snapped in her creations.
